Asylum, Migration and Integration fund

The total budget for The Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) 2021-2027 is € 9.88 billion.

The fund aims to further boost national capacities and improve procedures for migration management, as well as to enhance solidarity and responsibility sharing between Member States, in particular through emergency assistance and the relocation mechanism.

AMIF will contribute to the achievement of four specific objectives:

• to strengthen and develop all aspects of the common European asylum system, including its external dimension
• to support legal migration to the Member States, including by contributing to the integration of third-country nationals
• to contribute to countering irregular migration and ensuring effectiveness of return and readmission in third countries
• to enhance solidarity and responsibility sharing between the Member States, in particular towards those most affected by migration and asylum challenges

The largest share of the budget (63.5%) is channelled through shared management by the EC and the Member States. The remaining share is directly managed under the thematic facility by the EC’s DG Migration and Home Affairs, dedicated to allocating funds to emerging or unforeseen needs.

• The AMIF Funding contributes to the achievement of four specific objectives:

• Legal migration and integration: Supporting legal migration to EU Member States in line with economic and social needs, as well as contributing to the integration of non-EU nationals.
• Return: Enhancing fair and effective return strategies that contribute to combating irregular migration, with an emphasis on a sustainable, effective and dignifying return process.
• Solidarity: Making sure that EU Member States which are most affected by migration and asylum flows can count on solidarity from other EU Member States.
• Asylum: Strengthening and developing the Common European Asylum System, as well as its external dimensions.

AMIF is the EU’s funding arm in the areas of asylum, legal migration & integration, return and solidarity. This is particularly interesting to social economy organisations active in the field of social inclusion of individuals from migrant backgrounds such as those delivering training to reskill, facilitating job placements or else supporting their entrepreneurial endeavour.

Eligible organisations include:

• State and Federal authorities.
• Local public bodies.
• Non-governmental organisations.
• Humanitarian organisations.
• Private and public law companies.
• Education and research organisations.

Eligible countries include:

• All EU countries except Denmark
• Associated countries

1. Understand the programme: Familiarize yourself with the objectives and priorities of the AMIF. This will help you determine if your project aligns with the programme's goals.
2. Before applying for a grant, you should check the AMIF programmes in your region. Your project application must meet the selection criteria and investment priorities of your regional programme.
3. As mentioned above, a large part of  the programme is managed in shared responsibility between the European Commission and national and regional authorities in Member States. The Member States’ administrations choose which projects to finance and take responsibility for day-to-day management. You need to contact your national managing authority.
4. You will have to follow the application procedures of the relevant managing authority.

AMIF offers funding to organisations through calls for tender and grants.

The European Migration Network (EMN) is an EU network of migration and asylum experts who work together to provide objective, comparable policy-relevant information and knowledge on emerging issues relating to asylum and migration in Europe.

The EMN is coordinated by the European Commission under the responsibility of the Directorate for Migration and Home Affairs, and in cooperation with National Contact Points (EMN NCPs) appointed in each Member State, and Norway, by their national government. The EMN NCPs consist of Ministries of Interior and of Justice, plus Research Institutes, Non-Governmental Organisations, and the national offices of an International Organisation. History of the programme

The Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund was drafted on 16 April 2014 and is established for the period 2014–2020. The 2021-27 AMIF builds on the successful implementation of and lessons learnt from the AMIF 2014-2020. In this regard, it further strengthens the external dimension by adding areas under pre-integration, return and reintegration, which could not be fully covered in the programming period. The 2021-27 AMIF also ensures more flexibility in the implementation, by having a well-balanced mix of shared, direct and indirect management.
